Exiciting Art News for Whistler!

At a news conference held today, art collector Michael Audain revealed that he has significantly revised his originally announced intention to build a 27,000 square foot art museum surrounded by a spruce forest in Whistler, British Columbia – for a bolder 56,000 square foot structure. The new plan will be presented to Whistler Council this week.

"We realized that we would outgrow the smaller version within a decade and concluded that to expand the structure in the future would be so expensive that it just would not make sense," explained Audain, Chairman of the Audain Art Museum. "We wanted to do it right from the outset, so we went back to the drawing board and revised the plan. The museum's exhibition galleries will now exceed 20,000 square feet, over half the area of those in the Vancouver Art Gallery. The expansion will allow us to host larger temporary exhibitions from the world's great museums."

If the plan is approved, the four-season resort will have B.C.'s largest purpose-built art museum. "We will be honoured to have a world-class art collection on permanent display adding another great attraction for visitors, and contributing to our growing cultural tourism experience," says Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden.

Once the new plan is approved by the Municipality, Audain anticipates construction will start this summer with completion expected in early 2015.

Whistler to Host Influential TEDActive Conference

Whistler, B.C. - As Vancouver readies to host the acclaimed TED conference in 2014, Tourism Whistler is pleased to announce that Whistler will host the TEDActive event on the same dates.

"We are thrilled to welcome the influential TEDActive group to Whistler," said Barrett Fisher, Tourism Whistler's President & CEO.

TEDActive is an event held at the same time as the flagship TED conference, which will take place in Vancouver. Both events will take place March 17 to 21, 2014. The TED conference is expected to bring more than 1,300 of the world's leading thinkers while TEDActive generally draws about 700 participants.

"While the economic impact of hosting this conference is very positive to the region, even more important is the global profile," said Fisher. "The TEDActive conference will bring highly-influential, engaged leaders to the resort for a week-long series of discussions. You simply cannot assign a value to that type of exposure."

Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden said, "This event is aligned with the Resort Municipality of Whistler's goals to support business initiatives to help the resort succeed, and is an excellent opportunity to showcase our community to the world's most influential thinkers. I applaud the team that has worked to bring this important event to Whistler."

Karen Goodwin, Tourism Whistler's Vice President of Market Development, said the TEDActive conference is an excellent fit with Whistler's meetings brand.

"The TED conference and TEDActive are all about inspirational and innovative thinking, which aligns completely with our meetings brand," said Goodwin. "Whistler is a place that inspires people - people come here with passion and excitement; they come to dream and to connect; the very vibe of Whistler cultivates an environment of innovation and invigoration. Whistler inspires great thinking."

A tourism consortium of partners including the Canadian Tourism Commission, Tourism Vancouver and the Vancouver Convention Centre worked to bring the TED flagship conference to Vancouver and the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and Tourism Whistler worked together to bring the TEDActive conference to Whistler.

A joint media release issued by the Canadian Tourism Commission, Tourism Vancouver, the Vancouver Convention Centre and Tourism Whistler was distributed this morning, following the distribution of the official TED media release.

In Whistler, the TEDActive program will be hosted at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

"We are thrilled to welcome the TEDActive conference to The Fairmont Chateau Whistler for 2014," said Norman Mastalir, Managing Director of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. "The beauty of the mountains and the range of outdoor activities will be sure to inspire and stimulate conversation among the speakers and conference attendees. We are delighted that TED has chosen the slopes of Whistler to celebrate their 30th anniversary and start their

next chapter with us."

Tourism Whistler Members can expect to learn more in the coming weeks about upcoming opportunities associated with the conference. "Tourism Whistler will work with conference organizers to ensure that we maximize opportunities to showcase the resort to this influential group," said Fisher.

BCREA 2013 First Quarter Housing Forecast Update

Vancouver, BC – January 30, 2013.The British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) released its 2013 First Quarter Housing Forecast Update today.

BC Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) residential sales are forecast to increase 5.6 per cent to 71,450 units this year, before increasing a further 6.1 per cent to 75,830 units in 2014. The five-year average is 74,600 unit sales, while the ten-year average is 86,800 unit sales. A record 106,300 MLS® residential sales were recorded in 2005.

"2013 is shaping up to be a transition year in the BC housing market," said Cameron Muir, BCREA Chief Economist. "The groundwork has already begun for stronger housing demand as a significant number of part-time jobs in BC were converted into full-time employment last year."

"Residential values are expected to be on a more solid footing in 2013 as lower prices, both actual and inflation adjusted, have improved affordability. Many potential buyers that stayed on the sidelines in 2012 will likely enter the marketplace over the next year as the relatively strong financial condition of BC households precludes any deflationary spiral."

The average MLS® residential price in BC is forecast to edge down nearly 1 per cent to $510,400 this year and remain relatively unchanged in 2014, albeit up 0.6 per cent to $513,500.

WHISTLER BLACKCOMB ANNOUNCES MAJOR $18 MILLION CAPITAL EXPANSION FOR 2013.2014

Lift Expansion Includes New Whistler Mountain Harmony High-Speed Six-Pack Chairlift And New High-Speed Quad Chairlift In Blackcomb Mountain's Crystal Zone

WHISTLER, BC, January 18, 2013 – Whistler Blackcomb has unveiled capital plans for a major lift expansion. Whistler Mountain's Harmony high-speed, quad chairlift will be replaced with a new Doppelmayr high-speed, detachable, six-pack chairlift capable of transporting six people on each chair. Blackcomb Mountain will see a lift enhancement with a high-speed quad chairlift going into a new area in the Crystal Zone, currently accessed by a fixed-grip triple chair.

"This lift expansion clearly demonstrates our commitment to continuously enhance the skiing and riding experience on both mountains," says Dave Brownlie, President and Chief Executive Officer, Whistler Blackcomb. "Each zone the new lifts will service is unique and much-loved by Whistler locals and destination guests alike. The capital we are investing to enhance our already amazing experiences will make Whistler Blackcomb even better."

The new high-speed quad chairlift in the Crystal Zone will be 1,708 metres (5,604ft) in length, with a vertical rise of 535 metres (1,755ft). Skier carrying capacity will increase by 65 per cent over the current lift to 2,400 skiers per hour. The new quad will deliver skiers and riders to the same location as the current triple chair next to the Crystal Hut. However, the aspect of the new lift line is dramatically different, and will originate 158 metres (518ft) lower than the old Crystal lift. The bottom elevation will be 1,292 metres (4,239ft) and the top elevation of the lift will be 1,827 metres (5,994ft).

This bottom terminal location along the Blackcomb Glacier Road ski-out eliminates the need to utilize the Excelerator Chair to access many Crystal Zone trails including Ridge Runner, Rock 'N' Roll, and gladed trails like Outer Limits. It will be even quicker to return to the Glacier Express chair to access Horstman Glacier, Blackcomb Glacier and Spanky's. The increased length of the chair's line will give skiers and riders the opportunity to lap the entire Crystal Zone – from undulating cruisers to gladed zones riddled with natural terrain features and snow-caked trees straight out of a Dr. Seuss book. The name of this exciting new quad chairlift will be determined through a competition to be announced by Whistler Blackcomb later this winter.

The Harmony Six high-speed chairlift will replace one of Whistler Blackcomb's most popular lifts and will dramatically improve the uphill capacity by 50 per cent; going from 2,400 skiers per hour to 3,600. The Harmony Six will service terrain spanning from the edge of the Symphony Amphitheatre all the way over to Glacier Bowl, adjacent to the Peak Express. This area, known as the Harmony Zone, makes up over 485 hectares (1,200 acres) of Whistler Blackcomb's 3,306 hectares (8,171 acres) of total terrain. With a wide variety of beginner to expert terrain options, the Harmony Six will ensure skiers and riders are able to spend more time on the mountain exploring the spectacular, powder-covered alpine that Whistler Blackcomb is celebrated for.
